In recent years, an increasing number of general practitioners (GPs) have opted for careers outside the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. This trend has become more pronounced, particularly among independent consulting doctors.
Surge in Independent Consulting Doctors
From 2020 to 2025, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered 1,238 new independent consulting doctors in England. This marks a remarkable 212% increase compared to the 396 registrations during the previous five-year period. Notably, from 2024 to 2025, new registrations grew by 58% alone.
What Are Independent Consulting Doctors?
Independent consulting doctors are individual clinicians who offer medical services privately, outside of the NHS framework. They provide care either in person or through online consultations. Their areas of expertise include:
- General practice
- Skin complaints
- Women’s health
- Aesthetics
Currently, the CQC and NHS England do not maintain a distinct category for private GP registrations. As a point of reference, the Royal College of GPs reported 6,229 active NHS GP practices in September 2025.
Reasons for the Shift
Several factors are contributing to this shift. Many GPs are seeking greater autonomy and flexibility in their working conditions. The pressures of the NHS system, alongside increasing workloads, have prompted some to pursue opportunities in the private sector.
This burgeoning trend among GPs reflects broader changes in healthcare employment patterns. As professionals navigate their career options, the appeal of private practice continues to grow.
