“Fourth Division Match Poses Serious Safety Risks”

Concerns about safety are rising ahead of an upcoming match in the fourth division of German football. The Ost-Derby between BSG Chemie Leipzig and Hallescher FC is set for Sunday at 14:00. Authorities fear that police may be “actively attacked,” and innocent bystanders could face serious injuries.
Enhanced Security Measures for a High-Risk Game
In response to these concerns, approximately 1,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure safety during this high-risk match in the Regionalliga Nordost. Leipzig’s municipal government has issued an order highlighting the significant risk to life and safety looming around the Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark.
Comprehensive Restrictions
Security measures include a complete ban on items typically used in violent confrontations. The following items will be prohibited:
- Baseball bats
- Gloves filled with quartz sand
- Poles and rods
- Pepper spray devices
- Protective gear and padded clothing
Additionally, security forces will utilize water cannons, helicopters, and drones to oversee the event and quickly respond to any disturbances.
Escalating Tensions
Past incidents have heightened the stakes for this match. In September 2025, HFC fans stormed the pitch and clashed with BSG Chemie Leipzig players. Following that incident, the Nordostdeutsche Fußballverband imposed a €32,150 fine on HFC along with a probationary block ban. BSG Chemie faced a €21,700 fine.
The tension escalated further following an arson incident on February 1, 2026, when Hallescher FC’s U19 team bus was set ablaze after a friendly match. This incident fueled speculation among Hallescher fans that Chemie supporters were responsible, potentially in retaliation for the previous match’s violence.
Warnings from Authorities
Leipzig’s security authorities have issued stern warnings. The risks associated with intoxicated attendees rising, combined with their low willingness to cooperate, present additional dangers. Heiko Rosenthal, the city’s order mayor, emphasized that the situation is precarious and that there may be renewed attacks on police forces.
Moreover, law enforcement anticipates an alliance of Hallescher fans with supporters of Lok Leipzig, Chemie’s city rival. Security forces are gearing up for possible immediate confrontations between these opposing groups.
As the match approaches, it is crucial for all parties, including fans and officials, to prioritize safety and remain vigilant.
