Ancient Sarcophagus Unearthed in Central Dubrovnik

A significant archaeological finding has emerged in the heart of Dubrovnik. A large sarcophagus, approximately two meters long, was discovered near the Dubrovnik Cathedral during pavement rehabilitation activities at Poljana Marina Držića.

Discovery Details

The excavation, conducted under professional oversight, revealed the sarcophagus after workers removed paving and underlying layers. The Croatian national broadcaster HRT reported on the discovery, which occurred in late February 2026.

Historical Context

This sarcophagus dates back to the Late Antiquity period, underscoring its historical significance for both Dubrovnik and the broader region. Archaeologist Karmen Butigan noted that the sarcophagus lid was exposed during the early stages of the excavation.

  • Date of discovery: February 2026
  • Estimated length of sarcophagus: 2 meters
  • Period: Late Antiquity

Significance of the Find

The uncertainty surrounding whether the sarcophagus is in its original position adds to its importance. If the sarcophagus is found to be in situ, it could offer critical insights into the urban and burial practices in ancient Dubrovnik.

Mihaela Skurić, the Director of the Dubrovnik Restoration Institute, acknowledged that the area had been expected to yield archaeological findings. “Given the significance of this discovery, additional research will be necessary,” Skurić remarked.

Future Investigations

As the area in front of the Cathedral is archaeologically sensitive, further investigations will be conducted to better understand the context of the sarcophagus and its occupant. These studies aim to illuminate aspects of life and death in Dubrovnik during Late Antiquity.

This discovery serves as a poignant reminder that even in a city noted for its historic significance, invaluable chapters of the past are often concealed just beneath the surface.
