Etihad Becomes 5th Airline Flying A380s to This New Hub City

Etihad Airways has announced it will launch Airbus A380 services from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in October. This marks a significant capacity increase for the route and makes Etihad the fifth airline to offer A380 flights to Bangkok this year.
Details of Etihad’s A380 Launch to Bangkok
The new A380 service is set to commence on October 25, with flight EY402 departing Abu Dhabi at 9:20 PM. The flight will arrive in Bangkok at 6:35 AM local time the following day. After a two-hour turnaround, flight EY403 will take off from Bangkok at 8:30 AM, reaching Abu Dhabi at 12:20 PM local time.
This daily service reflects a major increase in capacity. Etihad’s A380 can accommodate up to 488 passengers, enhancing options for travelers.
Significance of Bangkok as a Destination
According to Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, “The A380 flying to Bangkok offers greater choice and significant additional capacity on one of our most popular leisure routes.” The A380’s deployment will cater to both business travelers and leisure guests.
Etihad’s Operations and Demand in Bangkok
Bangkok is one of Etihad Airways’ busiest Asian routes, with between four to six flights scheduled daily. This diversity underscores the route’s popularity and demand across various passenger demographics.
- 67 flights using Boeing 777-300ER
- 46 flights with Boeing 787-9
- 16 flights using Airbus A321neo
- 13 flights with Boeing 787-10
- 4 flights using Airbus A350-1000
These statistics indicate that, by February 2026, a multitude of aircraft types will serve the route, ensuring options for all types of travelers.
Competitive Landscape in Bangkok
Etihad’s A380 operations will place it among a notable group of airlines serving Bangkok with superjumbos. Currently, Thai Airways has ceased A380 operations, but Emirates leads with 112 flights from Dubai to Bangkok this month, along with a continuation to Hong Kong.
Qatar Airways also contributes significantly with up to three daily A380 departures totaling 78 flights monthly. Furthermore, both Lufthansa and Asiana Airlines offer one daily A380 flight to Bangkok from their respective hubs.
As the A380 presence in Bangkok grows, this reflects a positive trend in airline confidence regarding travel demand to this vital destination.
