Pimicikamak Evacuee Awaits Return Two Months After Power Outage

Two months have passed since a significant power outage devastated the Pimicikamak Cree Nation in northern Manitoba. Affected families, like that of Donald North Jr., are currently residing in hotels in Winnipeg. North, who is new to the city, expressed challenges in finding available resources. He, along with his wife and three children, evacuated to Winnipeg after the power outage. This has resulted in over 60 days of displacement for many residents.

Community Response and Ongoing Challenges
Many evacuees, still uncertain of their return timeline, have reached out to Robinson for updates. He tries to alleviate their frustrations, but the uncertainty remains. North also contributes to the community by assisting other evacuees enrolled in school in Winnipeg.
The Manitoba Hydro spokesperson confirmed that electricity in Pimicikamak is stable. However, they clarified that the corporation is not liable for the damage caused by the outage. The cause of the outage itself is still under investigation.
As families continue to endure hardships away from their homes, the community’s resilience is being tested. Efforts to restore normalcy remain ongoing, but many in Pimicikamak eagerly await their chance to go home.
