SPVQ Motorcyclist Escorting Near Centre Vidéotron Hit by Car

A police motorcyclist from the Service de police de la Ville de Québec (SPVQ) was injured on Tuesday while conducting an escort near the Centre Vidéotron. This operation was requested by the Montreal Canadiens for a pre-season game against the Ottawa Senators. The incident occurred at approximately 6:10 PM during a time of heavy traffic.

Details of the Incident

While managing traffic at the intersection of Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel and Rue de l’Exposition in La Cité-Limoilou, the officer was struck by a vehicle heading south on Rue de l’Exposition. Initial reports indicated that the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Circumstances Surrounding the Escort

The SPVQ regularly conducts police escorts for dignitaries, artists, and sports teams. In this instance, the Montreal Canadiens requested the escort service. Officers on escort duty can manage traffic and direct road users, even if it contradicts standard traffic signals and rules.

  • Time of Incident: Approximately 6:10 PM
  • Location: Intersection of Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel and Rue de l’Exposition
  • Involved Parties: SPVQ motorcyclist and a private vehicle
  • Injuries: Multiple injuries and fractures, but the officer is not in immediate danger.

Witness Account

An eyewitness reported that a corridor was opened by a police officer for motorcyclists to clear the way. However, a vehicle reportedly entered the area after a delay. When the police motorcyclist arrived, they collided with the car, which failed to observe traffic regulations.

Aftermath and Investigation

Following the collision, officials established a scene around the impact area. As of now, no criminal aspect to the incident has been suggested. The SPVQ stated that while the motorcyclist suffered significant injuries, they are currently out of immediate danger. Recovery is expected to take some time.

This incident is part of a concerning pattern; in October 2022, another officer was injured in a similar traffic-related event in Quebec City. Since the formation of the SPVQ in 1852, a total of 11 officers have lost their lives while on duty. Notably, there have been no fatalities in the line of duty in Quebec City since 1993.
