Snow and Rain Grace Gyeongsang Region on the 24th

On the 24th of this month, the Gyeongsang region of South Korea is expected to experience significant snowfall and rain. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported that many areas nationwide will see precipitation, with the potential for over 10 centimeters of snow, particularly in parts of North and South Gyeongsang provinces.
Weather Forecast for December 24
According to KMA’s analysis division head, Gyeong-min Kong, the approaching precipitation is attributed to a strong upper-level wind system moving over the Korean Peninsula. This weather pattern will enhance the interaction between cold air descending from the north and warm air from the south, leading to the development of low-pressure systems that will primarily affect areas in and around Jeju and the southern coast.
Expected Snowfall and Rainfall Amounts
- Expected Snow Accumulation:
- Parts of North and South Gyeongsang: 3-8 cm (with some areas exceeding 10 cm)
- Daegu and East Gyeongsang: 1-5 cm
- Chungcheong and Jeolla regions: 1-5 cm
- Expected Rainfall Amounts:
- Jeju: 20-80 mm
- Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang: 10-40 mm
- Daegu, North Gyeongsang, Gwangju, and South Jeolla: 5-30 mm
- Chungcheong region and Gangwon’s eastern mountainous areas: 5-10 mm
- Seoul metropolitan area: 1 mm
Safety Precautions
Although the rainfall on the morning of the 24th is not expected to be heavy, lower temperatures could lead to icy roads and rainfall that freezes upon contact. Residents are advised to exercise caution during this period. The snowfall and rainfall are anticipated to intensify in the afternoon and evening, particularly in the regions where warm, moist air from the south collides with the cold air moving in from the north.
Outlook Beyond December 24
By the early hours of December 25, the precipitation is forecasted to ease across most regions, except for the eastern coast. Overall, temperatures are expected to remain around seasonal averages, with a slight decrease in the coming days, before rising again throughout the afternoon of the 25th.
However, the eastern coastal areas may experience less temperature increase due to strong east winds, creating a significant temperature gap between eastern and western regions of the country.
