The golden snub-nosed monkey is celebrated as one of China’s national treasures, alongside the giant panda. Unfortunately, habitat destruction from logging and hunting, particularly during the Cultural Revolution, devastated their numbers. By the time Professor Yang Jingyuan began his research in 1991, the population had plummeted to about 500 individuals living in just six family groups.
Challenges in Conservation
Professor Yang’s mission involved understanding the behaviors and needs of these elusive monkeys. Initially, his team faced challenges in observing them due to their wariness of humans. They had to maintain a distance of half a mile until consistent interactions gradually built trust, allowing researchers to get closer.
Conservation Progress in Shennongjia
Yang has dedicated his career to studying and protecting this species within the UNESCO-listed Shennongjia Forest Reserve. This area is renowned for its biodiversity, featuring over 3,400 plant species and 600 types of invertebrates. To combat illegal logging and hunting, local communities were encouraged to transition from subsistence living to forest conservation practices, enhancing forest cover which now stands at approximately 96%.
