New Report Highlights High Value of Bideford to Barnstaple Railway Line

An independent study has indicated that reinstating the Bideford to Barnstaple railway line could significantly benefit the region’s development, transport infrastructure, and tourism. The findings were discussed at a workshop in Bideford, organized by the Northern Devon Railway Development Alliance, which aims to create a strategic business case for the project.

Key Findings from the Workshop

During the early September workshop, SLC Rail presented economic appraisal and engineering feasibility reports. The documents provided evidence regarding the strategic and economic viability of the rail link while ensuring the continuation of the Tarka Trail for walking and cycling.

  • The SLC report highlighted the social and connectivity value of the railway restoration.
  • It emphasized the importance of upgrading the Barnstaple to Exeter service for the Bideford extension.
  • Improved journey times, increased service frequency, and costs were identified as crucial factors affecting the economic case.

Community and Economic Impact

Restoring this railway line could enhance sustainable transportation and significantly boost local tourism. Roger Blake, acting convener for the alliance, mentioned that new rail services connecting Bideford and Exeter through Barnstaple could lead to a more prosperous and sustainable future. He stated, “No community which has had its train services restored has ever regretted it.”

Tim Steer, chair of Railfuture’s Devon and Cornwall regional branch, also noted that with projected housing growth and a modernized North Devon Line, Bideford could rank among the top 20% of Britain’s mainline railway stations.

Next Steps for Implementation

The workshop concluded with discussions on the next steps. A transport authority, such as Devon County Council or the new Devon and Torbay Combined Authority, must make a formal decision to promote the extension of the Bideford line. Additionally, a Government-compliant strategic outline business case needs to be commissioned, based on the preliminary work completed thus far.

Conclusion

The restoration of the Bideford to Barnstaple railway line, as outlined in the recent independent study, holds the potential for significant regional benefits. By enhancing connectivity and addressing local transport issues, the railway could play a pivotal role in the area’s development and prosperity.
