New Player CANAC Disrupts Laval Market

CANAC has officially expanded into Laval, marking the opening of its 36th store and disrupting the local hardware market. This significant milestone followed a decade of efforts to establish a location in the city. On its first day, the store attracted over 3,800 customers, highlighting the immediate interest in CANAC’s offerings.

Impact on the Laval Market

Richard Darveau, president of the Quebec Association of Hardware and Building Materials (AQMAT), emphasized CANAC’s arrival as a game-changer. He noted that such an entrance serves as “a stone in the water,” hinting at possible market shifts. While he refrained from predicting a price war, competition among local hardware stores is expected to intensify.

Investment and Store Details

The Laval store represents a $35 million investment. Despite currently ranking fifth in sales in Quebec—behind well-known competitors like RONA, BMR, Home Depot, and Canadian Tire—CANAC commands a significant market presence. Its stores only account for 6% of the total square footage occupied by hardware retailers but generate a remarkable 10.6% of the total sales revenue in the province.

The new 30,000 square foot location is among CANAC’s largest. General Manager Martin Gamache expressed his contentment seeing customers flock to the store. He explained that the Laval market had been a long-awaited opportunity for the company.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, CANAC plans to venture into the Isle of Montreal next year, specifically in the Anjou borough, and will also open a new store in Magog. Gamache acknowledged the fierce competition in the market but reassured that CANAC continues to thrive.

Store Attractions and Customer Engagement

The Laval store has already proven popular, particularly for outdoor furniture and gardening supplies. The bustling activity during its opening week was comparable to a typical May shopping season, which encourages optimism for future sales. Additionally, CANAC quickly hired 200 employees for this new location, illustrating its growth strategy.

  • Founded: Over 150 years ago
  • Headquarters: Quebec
  • Total Stores: 36
  • Future Openings: Magog and Montreal (Anjou)
  • Total Employees: 6,000 during peak season

Competitors are also preparing for the changing landscape. RONA, for example, has hinted at upcoming promotions and surprises for customers in Laval, including discounts up to 50% on various products. This response indicates the increased pressure they will face with CANAC’s presence in the market.

Richard Darveau noted that CANAC’s store layout and design provide a “comfortable zone” for buyers, minimizing the need to navigate large spaces. He characterized the new establishment as “a hardware store dressed in evening attire,” showcasing both style and functionality.

With these developments, CANAC is set to play a significant role in reshaping the Laval hardware market, driving innovations, and enhancing customer experiences in the industry.
