GP Practices Required to Offer Online Booking Services

UK ministers are advancing plans to mandate that GP practices offer online booking services. This initiative aims to streamline patient access to healthcare. The government believes it has provided sufficient financial backing for practices to implement this change.

Current State of Online Booking

Currently, around 6 million appointments are booked online monthly. This accounts for roughly one in five total appointments. Many GP practices have provided online booking for years, although some disable this feature during peak hours.

Government Support and Goals

  • Care Minister Stephen Kinnock stated the goal is to reduce the chaotic rush for morning appointments.
  • The initiative is part of a broader effort to digitize the healthcare experience.
  • £1.1 billion has been allocated to support this digital transformation in healthcare.

The government argues that online booking can alleviate pressure on A&E departments and free up phone lines for urgent cases. Research indicates that patients are more likely to turn to A&E when they cannot reach their GP by phone. Currently, just over half of patients find it easy to get through to their practice by phone, according to NHS England’s recent survey.

Collaboration with the BMA

This change was negotiated with the British Medical Association (BMA) earlier this year as part of GP contract reforms. Dr. Amanda Doyle from NHS England emphasized that modernizing access to GP services is crucial.

Modernizing Patient Access

The government is encouraging practices to create a patient charter, titled “You and Your GP.” This charter will guide patients on what to expect from their GP services and how to provide feedback or raise concerns.

Future Perspectives

Jacob Lant, the chief executive of National Voices, noted that effective online booking systems are essential for a modern NHS. While primary care facilities face significant challenges, enhancing digital systems can help meet patient demand more efficiently.
