Context of the Compensation Increase
This adjustment follows a long-term stagnation in juror pay. Attorney General Doug Downey highlighted that the previous compensation structure remained unchanged since 1989. He described this aspect of the justice system as being “neglected.”
Previous Payment Structure
Under the old payment system, jurors faced the following compensation:
- No pay for the first 10 days of duty.
- $40 per day from Day 11 to Day 49.
- $100 per day from Day 50 onward.
Impacts of the New Compensation Policy
The decision to increase juror payment to $120 daily is seen as a crucial step in removing financial obstacles. Downey emphasized that updating this compensation was “long overdue” and necessary for improving jury representation.
Mark Farrant, CEO of the Canadian Juries Commission, expressed support for the new payment policy. He pointed out that many individuals in Ontario, particularly those in the wage sector or gig economy, have previously been unable to serve on juries due to inadequate compensation.

While the increased pay is a positive development, Farrant advocates for additional resources. He stresses the importance of post-trial mental health support for jurors to further enhance participation and well-being in the justice system.
