Canadian Women’s Curlers Defeat China, Ending 3-Game Skid at Winter Games

Canadian curler Rachel Homan achieved a crucial victory on Monday morning, marking the end of a three-game losing streak at the Winter Olympics. Homan, leading her Ottawa-based team, defeated China’s Rui Wang with a score of 10-5.

Game Highlights

The match showcased impressive skills from the Canadian team. Key moments included:

  • Four points scored in the fourth end.
  • Three additional points in the sixth end.

This win brings Canada’s record to 2-3 in round-robin play at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium, while China also stands at 2-3.

Upcoming Matches

Following this victory, Homan and her team are set to face Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura, who currently holds a record of 1-4, in the evening session. Round-robin play is ongoing and will conclude on Thursday, with medal games scheduled for the weekend.

Changes in Umpire Setup

Notably, this was the first draw in women’s play since a significant change by World Curling. The governing body revised its umpire monitoring system. In a prior match against Switzerland, a controversial call on a hog line violation had negatively impacted Homan’s team. Following feedback, umpires will now revert to their traditional roles, observing the delivery area only when requested by the opposing team.

Current Standings

With their recent win, Canada is tied for sixth place alongside China and Great Britain in the standings. The competition is heating up as teams vie for the best positions in the round-robin phase.
