Ex-Pakistan Cricketer Warns Hardik Pandya Could Threaten T20 WC Showdown

Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Gul has singled out Hardik Pandya as a significant threat to Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 match. This clash is scheduled for Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Umar Gul’s Insights on Hardik Pandya

During a discussion on the Mr Cricket UAE podcast, Gul emphasized Pandya’s calm demeanor and strategic gameplay. He stated that obtaining Pandya’s wicket would be crucial for Pakistan’s success, noting his impressive ball-striking abilities and smart shot selections.

“One player who is really calm and composed is Hardik Pandya. His wicket will be extremely crucial for us,” Gul remarked.

Match Predictions and Tactical Analysis

Gul predicted the match will be played under immense pressure, giving both teams equal chances of victory. However, he expressed confidence that Pakistan might have the upper hand due to the conditions at R Premadasa Stadium.

“These matches carry truckloads of pressure. It’s a 50-50 contest, but Pakistan is likely to win based on conditions,” he stated.

Concerns Over India’s Middle Order

Gul also voiced concerns regarding India’s middle order, stating it has underperformed recently. He highlighted that if Abhishek Sharma regains fitness, he should replace Sanju Samson in the playing eleven.

“Abhishek Sharma is a top T20 player. If he is fit, he walks straight into India’s XI,” Gul suggested.

Additionally, he mentioned Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s favorable record against Pakistan, advocating for his inclusion in the lineup over a seamer like Arshdeep Singh to maintain batting depth.

Tactical Adjustments for Pakistan

Discussing Pakistan’s batting lineup, Gul commented on the ongoing debate between Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman. While he acknowledged Babar as Pakistan’s best player, he suggested Zaman’s power-hitting makes him better suited for the No. 4 position.

“Babar’s recent innings against the USA have boosted his confidence. However, Zaman is better suited to batting at No. 4,” Gul explained.

He urged the management to continue backing wicketkeeper Usman Khan, despite his struggles in the tournament. “The team should give Usman Khan another opportunity. They trust him, and consistent selection is key,” he noted.
