Following the recent men’s session four matchup between Sweden and Canada in Cortina, key rule violations emerged, necessitating clarification from World Curling.

Use of Video Replay

World Curling currently does not employ video replay for re-evaluating decisions made during matches. All decisions made in-game are considered final, and no appeals can be made post-match.

Delivery Violations

The placement of umpires at the ends of each sheet limits their ability to see all delivery infractions. However, if delivery issues are reported, umpires will monitor the situation for three ends. In the Friday evening game, no delivery violations were noted.

  • Players can retouch the handle before the hog line.
  • Touching the handle after the hog line leads to automatic removal of the stone.
  • According to Rule R.5 (e), a stone must be released clearly before reaching the hog line.
  • During the act of delivery, if a player touches the granite, the stone will also be removed from play per Rule R.5 (d).

To enhance oversight, starting from the Saturday afternoon session (February 14), two officials will circulate among the four sheets to observe deliveries more effectively.

Inappropriate Behaviour

In the aftermath of the Friday match, World Curling addressed inappropriate language used by a Canadian player. Officials from Canada received a verbal warning regarding this conduct.

Future violations of conduct may lead to further penalties as outlined in Rule R.19. This rule states:

  • Improper conduct, including foul language and equipment abuse, is strictly prohibited.
  • Any breach may result in suspension or other disciplinary actions against the offender.

World Curling emphasizes the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and adherence to regulations to ensure fair play in all competitions.
