The scenery here is breathtaking. The islands rise from the sea, resembling the backs of sleeping giants. Remote villages, dramatic cliffs, and lush landscapes define the region. This year, we decided to explore these islands, embracing a change from our usual city breaks.
Adventure Awaits
For our trip, we opted for the new “Self-Navigating Car Adventures” by Visit Faroe Islands. Launched in July, this service offers curated routes without many decisions, promoting a more relaxed exploration of the area.

During our time, we experienced a mix of guided directions and personal exploration. Our journey included a visit to the appealing village of Kvivik, known for its historical Viking farm excavations. A sunny day allowed us to enjoy outdoor dining, albeit with an unconventional petrol station hot dog.

Mystical Gjogv
One highlight was the village of Gjogv on Eysturoy Island. The village is known for its stunning views and vibrant wildlife. We hiked steep cliffs in search of puffins, marveled at the rugged coastline, and indulged in local delicacies from a café run by friendly locals.
Relaxation and Local Cuisine
While spa options were limited during our visit, we enjoyed a unique experience at the Saunadypp, a sea sauna that opens to the Skalafjordur fjord. It offered a rustic retreat, albeit without the luxury feel.
Our culinary experience culminated in a home hospitality program called Heimablidni, where we enjoyed traditional Faroese dishes at a local farm. This meal featured fermented lamb and fresh vegetables that gave us insight into the local culture.
Torshavn: A Culinary Capital
The capital, Torshavn, is now known for its remarkable dining scene. We dined at Aarstova, a cozy restaurant famed for its local seafood and lamb dishes, served in a relaxed, brasserie-style atmosphere.
