Seoul and Capital Region Face Smog and Heat Emergency Until Weekend

Seoul and the surrounding Capital Region are facing a significant emergency due to high levels of smog and heat. The South Korean government has officially implemented emergency measures to combat the severe air pollution, impacting public health and daily life.

Emergency Measures Activated

As of 6 AM today, the ‘High Concentration Fine Dust Emergency Reduction Measures’ have been activated for Seoul. This initiative will remain in effect until 9 PM tonight. Similar notifications have also been issued for Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, and the Gangwon Yeongseo area.

Pollution Levels

According to the National Institute of Environmental Research, stagnant air combined with smog has caused average daily concentrations of fine dust to exceed 50µg/m³ in Seoul and other northern regions. Projections indicate that areas including Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Yeongseo will continue to experience high pollution levels today.

Impact on Daily Activities

  • Public sector vehicle restrictions are in place with a two-day limit on vehicle entry.
  • Operational hours for administrative and public service facilities will be shortened.

Forecast for the Weekend

This crisis is expected to persist throughout the weekend, but weather forecasts suggest that a shift in wind patterns next week may alleviate the situation.

Residents of the Capital Region are advised to monitor air quality updates closely and take necessary precautions to protect their health during this smog and heat emergency.
