Univision Disappears from YouTube TV Platform

YouTube TV, operated by Google, has discontinued access to Univision and other channels owned by TelevisaUnivision. This decision came after contract renewal talks failed on Tuesday.

Details of the Dispute

The absence of TelevisaUnivision’s programming will impact YouTube TV subscribers significantly. Google has communicated that if content remains unavailable for an extended period, they will offer Spanish Base subscribers a credit or refund of $6, depending on their billing provider.

Current Negotiations

At the same time, YouTube TV is also in negotiations with NBCUniversal, whose current contract is set to expire on September 30. Talks between Google and NBCUniversal are ongoing as of now.

Univision’s Role in the U.S. Media Landscape

  • Univision is the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the United States.
  • It operates 59 owned and/or operated stations across the country.
  • TelevisaUnivision boasts over 160 million subscribers globally on various platforms.
  • They generate significant ad revenue from content viewed on YouTube.

Reactions from TelevisaUnivision

In response to the removal of its channels, TelevisaUnivision criticized Google for its decision, stating it undermines Hispanic viewers who rely on the platform for news, sports, and entertainment. They labeled Google’s actions as tone-deaf, especially during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Concerns Over Accessibility

TelevisaUnivision also claimed that YouTube TV planned to introduce a separate pricing tier for Univision, which they referred to as an “Hispanic Tax.” This potential fee increase could mean an additional $15 per month for viewers.

Government Attention

The dispute has garnered attention from lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, who expressed concern over Google’s decision on social media. He argued against putting Univision and similar networks behind a paywall, emphasizing that it unfairly burdens Hispanic communities.

Additional Impact on YouTube TV Subscribers

In addition to Univision, YouTube TV also dropped other TelevisaUnivision channels, including:

  • UniMas
  • TUDN
  • Galavision
  • FOROtv
  • De Película
  • De Película Clásico
  • Bandamax
  • Telehit
  • Telehit Música
  • tlnovelas

Subscribers have also lost DVR recordings for Univision content, further complicating access to their favorite shows.

Conclusion

The removal of Univision and other TelevisaUnivision networks from YouTube TV marks a significant shift in offerings for subscribers, particularly within Hispanic communities. As negotiations continue, viewers are advised to explore alternative platforms for accessing Univision’s programming.
