Donut Prices Soar: Here’s the Solution

As Fat Thursday approaches, the prices of traditional Polish donuts, known as pączki, have seen a significant increase. The median price for one pączek now stands at 4.80 PLN, compared to 3.80 PLN in 2023, according to recent data from PanParagon.
Rising Donut Prices: Trend Analysis
The price of pączki has also risen since the beginning of 2023. During January and February, the average cost was approximately 4.25 PLN.
Discount Stores Offer Cheaper Alternatives
In contrast, discount stores provide a more affordable option. The current median price in these stores is 3.19 PLN. However, this represents a marked increase from early 2023, when pączki were priced at 2.21 PLN. Last year’s rates were slightly higher at 3.09 PLN.
Discount chains often run significant promotions on Fat Thursday, incentivizing bulk purchases. This strategy reduces the effective price per pączek, attracting customers who might also shop for other items during their visit.
Impact of Inflation on Prices
Inflation has played a crucial role in the rising costs associated with donuts. Increased prices for ingredients, energy, and labor have all contributed to the forecast that consumers will pay more for pączki in 2026 compared to previous years.
Sales Statistics for Fat Thursday
Sales of pączki on Fat Thursday surge dramatically, often exceeding normal Thursday purchases by more than tenfold. In contrast, the sales of faworki (angel wings) see only a modest increase of 21%. This indicates that pączki are viewed as a festive item, drawing in significantly more holiday shoppers.
What Drives the Demand for Pączki?
- High seasonal demand on Fat Thursday
- Promotional pricing strategies in stores
- Inflation impacting overall costs
According to Antonina Grzelak from PanParagon, the combination of local promotions and inflationary pressures creates a complex pricing landscape for pączki.
In summary, as Fat Thursday approaches, shoppers should be prepared for higher prices in both bakeries and discount stores. The popularity of pączki remains strong, with sales expected to soar during this traditional Polish celebration.
