Phillies Aim to Trade Nick Castellanos Before Full-Squad Workout

The Philadelphia Phillies are actively exploring options to trade outfielder Nick Castellanos before their first full-squad workout for spring training. This effort comes as the team aims to address his recent struggles and comments regarding communication with management.
Phillies’ Trade Discussions for Castellanos
The 32-year-old Castellanos, whose performance last season included a .250 batting average, 17 home runs, and 72 RBIs over 147 games, has been a subject of controversy. He was benched late in the previous season after making what Manager Rob Thomson called “an inappropriate comment” following a defensive replacement. Castellanos expressed concerns about his communication with Thomson, describing it as “questionable.”
Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, confirmed that discussions with other teams regarding Castellanos are ongoing. “That’s our focus prior to the start of spring training,” he stated. The team hopes to finalize a decision regarding Castellanos before full-squad workouts begin next Monday.
Contract and Future Prospects
Castellanos is in the final season of a significant five-year contract worth $100 million. His future with the team is uncertain, especially with Adolis García signed as a potential replacement. García joined the Phillies with a one-year contract valued at $10 million.
Upcoming Spring Training Schedule
- First pitcher and catcher workout: Wednesday
- First full-squad workout: Next Monday
When asked if Castellanos would still report to camp if no trade occurs, Dombrowski indicated that the team is focused on making a move before players arrive.
Wheeler’s Recovery and Rotation Outlook
In addition to the Castellanos situation, Phillies ace Zack Wheeler is recovering from surgery and complications related to a blood clot. Thomson reported that Wheeler is currently throwing from 90 feet and is doing well but is unlikely to be ready for opening day.
With Wheeler’s recovery ongoing, Andrew Painter, a promising 22-year-old right-hander, may seize an opportunity to secure a spot in the starting rotation. Painter had a 5-8 record with a 5.26 ERA in 26 minor league starts last year, returning from Tommy John surgery in July 2023. Dombrowski praised Painter’s physical condition upon seeing him during spring training preparations.
The Phillies are making concerted efforts to bolster their roster as they approach the new season, with Castellanos’ situation remaining a key focus in the coming days.
