Spurs Waive Jeremy Sochan, Making Him a Free Agent

The San Antonio Spurs have officially waived Jeremy Sochan, enabling the All-Rookie forward to become a free agent. This move follows efforts by the Spurs and potential trade partners, which did not result in a deal prior to the trade deadline. Sochan, who was selected ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, is expected to weigh offers from multiple interested teams.
Sochan’s Current Situation
Sochan’s playing time has significantly dwindled recently; he has only played over five minutes in a game twice since January 7. Reflecting on his challenging season, Sochan stated, “I’m not going to lie to you and say it was rainbows and sunshine all day.” This year marks the first time in his four-year career that he has faced such difficulties.
Performance and Team Dynamics
- Sochan has averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and an assist over 28 games this season.
- His field goal shooting stands at 47.5%.
- He showcased impressive versatility during Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season, including a standout 31-point game.
His reduction in playing time is partly attributable to the rise of rookie Carter Bryant, who was drafted 14th overall in 2025. Bryant has emerged as an effective two-way player, contributing significantly with better scoring and defensive stats. This growth has left the Spurs short on minutes for Sochan.
Endorsement from Coach Johnson
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson praised Sochan for maintaining professionalism during these trying times. Johnson noted, “He’s been asked to be the role of defensive disruptor… He’s done exactly that.” Despite Sochan’s desire for more playing time, Johnson emphasized the importance of staying committed and waiting for opportunities in the league.
Sochan is now looking for a new opportunity where he can contribute effectively. After spending four years with the Spurs, he expressed a strong attachment to the city, remarking, “I feel like I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this city.” Moving forward, he aims to channel that dedication into his next team.
