Wintry Storm Hits Nova Scotia, Sparks Snow-Clearing Operations

A significant winter storm has impacted Nova Scotia, particularly the Halifax area, triggering snow-clearing efforts. The municipality announced these operations would persist into Thursday morning.

  • Expected Snowfall: 10 to 20 centimetres, concentrated along the Atlantic coastline and Cape Breton.

City Operations and Services

Halifax has implemented a winter parking ban from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday to facilitate snow removal. Municipal offices will close early Wednesday at 3 p.m., and employees who can work remotely are encouraged to do so.

  • Essential Services: The 311 service, winter operations, and Halifax Transit will continue regular operations.
  • Transit Routes: Snow routes are activated for Halifax Transit buses to ensure safe travel.
  • Dartmouth Ferries: Currently unaffected by the storm.

Public Facilities and Education Closures

Several public facilities are also impacted by the winter storm:

  • Recreation Facilities: Most will close at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
  • Public Libraries: All branches will close at 3 p.m.
  • Schools: All schools in the Tri-County, South Shore, and Annapolis Valley regions were closed on Wednesday. Additionally, East Hants, Advocate, and Parrsboro schools in the Chignecto Central region also closed.

CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon warned of potential power outages due to heavy snow accumulating on branches and power lines. Residents are urged to prepare for possible disruptions.
