Little Red Riding Hood Shines in Totnes Pantomime’s 90th Anniversary Celebration
The Totnes Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (TAODS) has recently celebrated a significant milestone with its 90th anniversary. This year, the society successfully staged the pantomime “Little Red Riding Hood” at the Civic Hall, which drew impressive crowd attendance, with three of the five performances fully sold out.
90 Years of Community Theatre
Founded in 1936 as the Totnes Amateur Operatic and Musical Society, TAODS has a rich history in local theatre. Its inaugural production was Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance,” presented at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel. The society’s first pantomime, “Cinderella,” debuted in 1953 at the Old Market Hall, continuing the tradition that now thrives at the Civic Hall.
Community Involvement and Impact
“Little Red Riding Hood,” written and directed by Gina Tredwell, featured a diverse cast that showcased local talent across generations. The production successfully attracted over 1,100 attendees and raised £300 for Totnes Caring, an organization that supports the elderly and vulnerable in the community.
Simon Harris, Chair of TAODS, emphasized the significance of the annual Totnes Pantomime, stating, “It’s a highlight of our community calendar. Events like these foster connections and celebrate local talent.”
Personal Connections and Traditions
Harris shared his own family ties to the society, revealing that his father played an active role in TAODS. Many in the cast and crew have a long-standing connection to the pantomime tradition, having participated since childhood and returning as adults.
Audience Reception and Experiences
The production received enthusiastic feedback, with attendees praising the performances and overall experience. One audience member remarked it as, “By far the best production I’ve ever seen at the Civic Hall.”
For the cast, the experience was equally rewarding. A newcomer expressed gratitude for the unforgettable opportunity, while Sean Ferris, who portrayed Mother Nature, described the production as a treasure trove of memories.
A Meaningful Collaboration
- Costumes, sets, and props were created by TAODS members and cast parents.
- Volunteers dedicated countless hours to bring the production to life.
TAODS has been a cornerstone of community theatre in Totnes for 90 years. The society is dedicated to providing opportunities for performers of all ages and experience levels.
