Scout Willis Transforms Her Hollywood Home into a Fantasy Wonderland

Scout Willis has transformed her Hollywood home into a whimsical sanctuary, affectionately called “the Chapel of Love” by friends. The musician envisions this charming storybook house as a gathering place where connections blossom.
Details of the Transformative Renovation
Originally built in the 1920s, this quaint Normandy-style cottage was designed by architect Frederick A. Hanson. With its historical significance, the home is a designated landmark in Hollywood, retaining much of its original character. Willis was captivated by its groin-vaulted entryway and unique ceiling during her first visit.
A Homage to Hollywood History
Willis considers herself a “nerd for LA history” and excitedly embraced the opportunity to be a custodian of this unique piece of architecture. The house’s petite footprint and signature façade could not be altered significantly, in accordance with its historical landmark status.
Collaborative Interior Design
To personalize her home, Willis enlisted the help of Roman Alonso from the AD100 firm Commune Design, with whom she has a long-standing relationship. Together, they undertook several renovations while preserving the house’s charm.
- Ceiling beams were stripped to reveal the original wood.
- Windows were subtly revised to enhance airflow.
- The kitchen and closet were renovated; the closet was transformed from a second bedroom.
Willis wanted her home to embody both elegance and playful whimsy, striking a balance between an adult woman’s dwelling and a child’s playground. Alonso emphasized the importance of reflecting Willis’s personality in the design choices.
Creating a Unique Aesthetic
Willis was actively involved in all design decisions from tiles to colors, allowing her unique style to shine through in the final result. “She chose everything,” Alonso noted. Together, they crafted a space that feels undeniably like home for both Willis and her rescue dog, Grandma.
This transformation celebrates not only the house’s history but also Scout Willis’s vision of a delightful and inviting space for gatherings and connections.
