Hoevelakense Teen Zeger (17) Returns to Georgia to Complete Day Center

Seventeen-year-old Zeger Duine from Hoevelaken is set to return to Georgia this summer for his fourth visit. Two years ago, he joined a group of young people to help construct a day center for peers in the region. Despite taking three weeks to recover from that trip, the experience had a lasting impact on him. Zeger is determined to finish what he started.
Zeger Duine’s Commitment to Community in Georgia
Zeger shared his motivation with local media, stating, “Whenever I can help others, I do.” His commitment extends beyond borders, reaching into Georgia where many families struggle with financial issues. The day center aims to provide food, homework assistance, and social activities for youth up to 16 years old.
Preparation for the Georgia Project
The youth group from Hoevelaken prepared thoroughly before their first trip. An initial reconnaissance team of adults traveled to Aghaiani, located an hour from Tbilisi, to assess safety and project needs. They aimed to establish the day center to support local children.
The Challenges Faced
- The construction site required significant cleanup before work could begin.
- Participants spent long days moving rubble and mixing mortar, often eating dinner late at night.
- Despite the obstacles, they reported completing about 90% of the ground floor.
Continuing the Project
Zeger’s father, Gerwin, accompanied him as a supervisor and maintained communication with local officials. After the Hoevelaken group left, the project stalled, causing frustration among team members. “We eagerly wanted the center to be operational,” explained Zeger. The project is set to resume in the fall of 2024, with Zeger and his father planning a hiking trip in the Caucasus Mountains.
Upcoming Plans and Community Involvement
Due to the positive progress, the day center is scheduled to open this summer, motivating Zeger and his father to join a new team. This time, they will travel with families for a more immersive experience. “We aim to finalize our work on the center and participate in the summer camp,” said Zeger. “There’s still space for more participants!”
Zeger’s Aspirations Beyond Georgia
Looking to the future, Zeger expressed a desire to continue his travels. After completing his education, he hopes to backpack in the Dolomites and pursue philanthropic causes. He also dreams of starting his own business, showing no fear of adventure and a drive to explore the world.
