The countdown is over, and Italy shines brightly as it prepares for the grand opening ceremony of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. This monumental event, set for tonight, aims to showcase Italy’s culture, spirit, and athletic prowess.

  • Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister
  • Ignazio La Russa, President of the Senate
  • Lorenzo Fontana, President of the Chamber of Deputies
  • Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Ministers

Security Measures in Place

As the opening ceremony approaches, security remains a top priority. Over 1,900 military personnel, 2,000 carabinieri, and support from approximately 1,500 volunteers will ensure a safe environment. This includes:

  • 170 operational vehicles
  • Radar systems
  • Aerial defense assets

Itinerary of the Day

Earlier in the day, President Mattarella visited the Olympic Village, meeting with Italian athletes and signing the Murale della Tregua. He will inaugurate Casa Italia at the Triennale today before attending the opening ceremony at San Siro.

International Dignitaries

The ceremony will also welcome several international leaders, including:

  • J.D. Vance, Vice President of the United States, accompanied by his family
  • Marco Rubio, Secretary of State

Protests Planned

While the festivities are underway, protests are expected. Demonstrations against the presence of the International Olympic Committee in Milan will occur, along with a symbolic demonstration, “Show Israel the red card,” near the University Statale. Further protests, including an “anti-Olympic” torchlight march, are planned for the coming days.

As Italy prepares to illuminate the night with the opening ceremony, the eyes of the world will be on Milano-Cortina, a city ready to celebrate sports, unity, and culture on an international stage.
