Predator’s Laced Sweets Leave Summer Camp Victims Exhausted

Boys attending a summer camp in Stathern, Leicestershire, were left exhausted and incapacitated after consuming sweets laced with sedatives. Jon Ruben, 76, the camp leader, used these sweets to facilitate sexual assaults on two children and committed acts of cruelty against several others.

Incidents at Stathern Lodge

The events occurred during a summer camp at Stathern Lodge, where Ruben encouraged the children to participate in a so-called “sweet game.” His intentions became evident when several boys exhibited symptoms of sedation, appearing “tired and floppy,” akin to being intoxicated.

Criminal Charges and Pleas

  • Ruben was arrested after eight children and an adult became unwell at the camp in July.
  • He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual assault and child cruelty.
  • Ruben also faces charges related to drug possession and the creation of indecent images.

His actions extended beyond the campchildren. He admitted to administering a noxious substance to his wife, Susan Ruben, to ensure she would remain unconscious during the assaults.

Evidence and Court Proceedings

In court, prosecutor Mary Prior KC detailed how Ruben employed his veterinary knowledge to refine the use of sedatives. He illegally purchased drugs, believing he had acquired Temazepam, but in fact, it was liquid Xanax. This led to a chilling discovery of a “chocolate poisoning chart” in his possession.

Before the court, Susan Ruben expressed her horror and betrayal, highlighting that the man she thought she married was, in reality, a predatory individual. She is now pursuing divorce proceedings, having been deeply affected by her husband’s heinous actions.

Impact on Victims and Their Families

  • Some victims had consumed more sedated sweets than intended, increasing their risk.
  • Parents voiced their grief in court, condemning Ruben as a “creature” devoid of remorse.
  • The damage done to the children’s lives was described as extensive and traumatic.

Ongoing Investigation

The Leicestershire Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the delayed response to the initial reports of illness. They are actively seeking any additional victims who may have suffered due to Ruben’s actions.

Upcoming Sentencing

Jon Ruben is awaiting sentencing at Leicester Crown Court. His swift admission of guilt has raised mixed responses, with his defense claiming genuine remorse while victims’ families question his accountability.

As this case unfolds, the community remains vigilant, hoping justice will be served for those whose lives have been irrevocably altered by these tragic events.
