SAQ Resumes Sale of Select American Products

The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) has received government authorization to resume the sale of select American products. This decision comes as a response to the potential degradation of product quality by March 2027. It is estimated that this initiative could generate nearly $9 million in profits to support food banks across the province of Quebec.
Government Support for Food Banks
Finance Minister Eric Girard emphasized the exceptional nature of this initiative, stating that it will diversify efforts to assist Quebecers. Despite this allowance, the total ban on American product sales, implemented in March 2025 due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, remains in effect.
Quality Assurance and Product Restrictions
- Only products that could be affected by quality issues before March 2027 are eligible for sale.
- The SAQ must not order new American products during this time.
- Products at risk of expiration have previously been identified and were scheduled for disposal.
SAQ spokesperson Linda Bouchard noted that sales would include primarily clear glass bottles, creams, and sakés. This initiative aims to generate revenue that can feed into the province’s food banks, which are under significant strain.
Financial Projections
If all eligible products are sold, it is anticipated that up to $8.6 million will be directed to the Banques alimentaires du Québec (BAQ). The SAQ plans to allocate $4.9 million for operational costs and discounts associated with this sales initiative.
Discounts and Sales Channels
- A 15% discount will be applied to all select American products.
- Products will be available exclusively online or at SAQ Dépôt locations.
- Additional discounts of 5% for 6 to 11 bottles and 10% for 12 or more bottles will also apply.
Martin Munger, Executive Director of BAQ, praised the government’s decision as a remarkable relief for the network, which faces increasing demand. He highlighted that this unprecedented initiative will significantly aid their ongoing mission to combat food insecurity.
Distribution of Funds
The funds received from product sales will be equitably distributed throughout the province’s food bank network. Discussions on the allocation process are planned as part of the 2026-2027 budget meetings of BAQ.
Public Reaction and Future Considerations
Bouchard acknowledged that reactions to this decision may vary. Concerns have also surfaced regarding a recent pilot project involving Uber Eats for the delivery of selected products in Montreal, reflecting broader public scrutiny of partnerships with U.S. companies.
Despite potential controversies, officials believe that the public will recognize the necessity of this initiative. Otherwise, the unsold products would be wasted, incurring costs and contributing to environmental waste. Chantal Rouleau, Minister responsible for Social Solidarity, expressed full support, urging solidarity in these challenging times.
