Football Central to Aulas’ Campaign in Lyon

In Lyon’s La Duchère neighborhood, a new project promises to reshape the area. The initiative proposes a venue that can accommodate 10,000 to 12,000 spectators, alongside leisure facilities, office spaces, and a tramway for accessibility. This vision is led by Jean-Michel Aulas, the former president of Olympique Lyonnais (OL), who aims to draw from successful developments like the Groupama Stadium in Décines-Meyzieu.

Jean-Michel Aulas’ Vision for Lyon

At a recent site visit, Aulas emphasized the potential for job creation and innovation through this project. He highlighted that the proposed stadium could serve local club Lyon-La Duchère and host matches for the newly established third division. Despite stepping down from his role at OL after 36 years in 2023, he remains active in football as the vice-president of the French Football Federation (FFF) and president of the Women’s Professional Football League (LFFP).

Support from Football Legends

Aulas’ candidacy for mayor of Lyon is gaining traction. He has received endorsements from notable figures in football, including Karim Benzema and Bafétimbi Gomis. Benzema, who was raised in Lyon and played for OL before moving to Real Madrid in 2009, stated he is fully supportive of Aulas’ campaign. He believes that Aulas’ leadership could significantly benefit the city.

  • Karim Benzema: Former OL player and Ballon d’Or winner.
  • Bafétimbi Gomis: Former international who has publicly expressed support for Aulas.
  • Jean-Louis Borloo: Former Minister of Cities, also endorsing Aulas.

Young residents of La Duchère are particularly motivated by these endorsements. They recognize Aulas’ contributions to OL, guiding the club from the second division to champions of France from 2002 to 2008. Local youth like 20-year-old Mahrez express admiration for Aulas, indicating they are likely to vote for him in the upcoming municipal elections.

Anticipation for Change in Lyon

Supporters hope that if Aulas prevails against the incumbent Green mayor, Grégory Doucet, it will lead to improvements in the area’s infrastructure and community support. The buzz around Aulas’ campaign is fostering optimism among the younger generation, primarily driven by the influence of football heroes.

As Aulas continues his campaign, the focus remains on building a vibrant future for La Duchère, cementing his legacy both in sports and local governance.
