Penguins’ Jones Receives 20-Game Suspension

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Caleb Jones has been handed a significant punishment following a violation of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. The league announced a 20-game suspension without pay, effective immediately.

Details of the Suspension

This suspension comes under the guidelines of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and its players’ association. In addition to the suspension, Jones is mandated to seek evaluation and potential treatment through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

Caleb Jones’ Statement

In response to the suspension, Jones issued a public statement acknowledging the positive test result. He explained that he was undergoing exosome therapy for a documented injury, provided by an external source.

Explaining the Positive Test

  • Jones claims the positive test stemmed from a contaminated substance linked to his treatment.
  • He emphasized that he did not intentionally consume any prohibited substances for performance enhancement.
  • Despite this, he recognized that players are responsible for everything that enters their bodies.

Jones expressed regret for his actions, stating, “I’m sorry to have let down my teammates, the Penguins organization, and our fans.” The NHL will not provide further comments on this matter.
