CBFC Regional Officer Withholds Details in ‘Jana Nayagan’ Censorship Dispute

In a significant development surrounding the censorship of the film “Jana Nayagan,” the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has withheld vital information regarding the movie’s certification. The film, starring former actor and current politician Vijay, has generated considerable anticipation among fans, particularly with the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

CBFC Reaction to Certification Queries

CBFC Chennai Regional Officer, D. Balamurali, confirmed that under existing regulations, details about the certification process cannot be disclosed. He stated, “I don’t have any information. Even if I do have, I cannot reveal it at this stage.” The secrecy surrounding the examination process means the public will only be informed once a certificate is granted.

Timeline of Events

  • Initial Certification Request: “Jana Nayagan” was initially scheduled for release on January 9, 2026.
  • Examination Date: The CBFC’s five-member examination committee reviewed the film on December 19, 2025.
  • Decision Communication: The production house received feedback on December 22, suggesting a U/A 16+ rating after required edits.
  • Submission of Edited Film: The resubmission occurred on December 24, 2025.

Complaint Against CBFC Procedures

A complaint raised concerns about the film’s content, which allegedly includes depictions of foreign powers inciting religious conflict. The complaint emphasized that no defense experts were consulted during the examination, raising procedural questions about the certification process.

Following this complaint, on December 29, 2025, the CBFC halted the certification of “Jana Nayagan.” On January 5, 2026, the production house was notified that the film would be referred to the revising committee.

Legal Proceedings

In response to the hold-up, KVN Productions filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking immediate certification. Justice P.T. Asha directed the CBFC to present relevant records by January 7. After hearings, the court ordered the issuance of the U/A 16+ certificate on January 9.

However, the CBFC promptly challenged this order. The Madras High Court granted an interim stay on the single judge’s ruling, which the Supreme Court supported after the production house sought a further appeal.

Current Status

As of January 27, 2026, the Division Bench of the Madras High Court overturned the single judge’s order, citing lack of an opportunity for the CBFC to respond. The matter was returned to the original judge for another review. Despite being granted the chance to amend its appeal, KVN Productions has yet to pursue this option, leading to speculation within the industry regarding the production house’s position.

In summary, details surrounding the “Jana Nayagan” film certification remain closely guarded, as both CBFC and KVN Productions are navigating complex legal and procedural challenges.
