Christ of Mercy Highlights Seville’s 2026 Holy Week Poster

The Consejo de Hermandades unveiled the poster for Seville’s 2026 Holy Week on Monday. Titled “La Cruz Santa de Sevilla,” the poster is crafted by Cádiz artist Antoine Cas. This work offers both a contemporary and introspective interpretation of the Christ of Mercy, the emblematic figure of the Hermandad de Santa Cruz.

Artistic Vision of the Christ of Mercy

Antoine Cas’s creation moves beyond literal realism, diving deep into the spiritual essence associated with suffering and redemption. According to the artist, the depiction of the Crucified at Santa Cruz presents an ethereal quality where human suffering is starkly expressed.

Cas describes the red background as a virtual space, void of landscapes like Seville or Jerusalem, transforming it into a symbol of inner reflection. This choice reinforces the poster’s emotive power, depicting themes of sacrifice and hope.

Details of the Composition

  • The Crucified figure is portrayed amid intense red tones, symbolizing deliverance and sacrifice.
  • A golden halo surrounds the cross, fostering a connection between earthly and divine realms.
  • At the base of the cross, Mary Magdalene tenderly embraces it, an interpretation linked to the Hermandad del Buen Fin.

Antonio Luis Soto, responsible for presenting the artist, expressed gratitude to Seville’s brotherhoods for their understanding and support. This year’s Holy Week marks the end of Soto’s tenure at the Consejo, making the occasion particularly poignant.

“The Holy Week poster reflects the emotional depth felt by both the artist and the community,” he stated. Soto emphasized how the artwork harmonizes contemporary and Baroque styles, creating an intimate experience for viewers.

A Legacy for the City

Francisco Vélez, the President of the Consejo de Hermandades, concluded the presentation with praises for Antoine Cas, marking the poster as a cherished gift to Seville. José Luis Sanz remarked that the artwork now belongs to the entire city and not just to the artist, creating a spiritual heritage for all Sevillanos.

Technical Aspects and Background of Antoine Cas

The poster’s combination of oil, acrylic, pastel, and pressed charcoal on raw linen weighs heavily on its expressive texture. Measuring 180 by 120 cm, the vertical composition conveys a symbolic dialogue with the traditional Baroque influences of Seville through a modern lens.

Antoine Cas, born in Cádiz in 1969, holds a Fine Arts degree from the University of Seville, where he also studied Conservation, Restoration, and Art History. His works have been featured in notable art fairs such as ARCO Madrid, Art Montpellier, and Art Paris, along with a rich portfolio of religious-themed posters in Andalusia.
