Jamaica’s Shane Pitter Channels ‘Cool Runnings’ Spirit: Fishing, Bobsleigh Connection

Shane Pitter, an emerging Jamaican bobsleigh pilot, shares his journey inspired by the iconic film “Cool Runnings.” His story began not with dreams of bobsledding, but with a passion for fishing six years ago. At that time, he was unaware of what bobsleigh was, let alone how to drive a sled.
From Fishing to Bobsleigh
Pitter’s transition to bobsleigh came unexpectedly. While at a track meet, a teammate approached him with an invitation to join the sport. Curious but inexperienced, Pitter accepted the challenge, marking the beginning of his journey.
Inspired by Legacy
The 1993 film “Cool Runnings,” which dramatically portrays the Jamaican bobsleigh team’s debut at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, became a significant source of motivation for him. Pitter expressed how the film’s message resonated with him. The depiction of perseverance, even after a sled crash, spurred his determination: “Those guys really motivate me,” he stated.
A Journey to the Olympics
Before realizing his Olympic aspirations at the Milano Cortina 2026 games, Pitter needed to navigate the rigorous process of qualification. His journey began with national team tryouts, where he excelled by coming first in the push competition. This achievement granted him the opportunity to train in Lake Placid, where he began as a bobsleigh pilot.
Training Challenges
Pitter faced significant challenges early in his training. He recalled crashing several times as he attempted to master the sled. “I went from the lowest start,” he explained. Despite initial struggles, he was determined to improve. Motivated by his coach’s criticisms, Pitter sought knowledge through creative means, such as watching point-of-view (POV) videos of sled runs.
Continuous Improvement
With each training session, Pitter adopted a strategy of progression. He recognized that watching and analyzing performance helped sharpen his skills on the track. “That is how I take my time getting better and better, every day,” he shared, indicating his commitment to excellence.
Shane Pitter’s journey highlights the connection between passion and perseverance, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Jamaican bobsledders. As he prepares for the upcoming Olympics, his story underscores a remarkable shift from a fishing enthusiast to a determined bobsleigh pilot.
