Sandown’s Grade 1 Event Approved; Heavy Rain Expected at Leopardstown

The Dublin Racing Festival (DRF) faced significant disruptions due to adverse weather conditions. Heavy rainfall led to the postponement of Saturday’s opening day at Leopardstown, now rescheduled for Monday. Racing officials canceled the events after an early morning inspection revealed unfit conditions on the track.

Weather Impact on Dublin Racing Festival

On Saturday morning, racing was called off after a review at 7 AM showed that the track could not host events safely. An inspection is scheduled for Sunday at 8 AM to determine if racing can proceed that day, which includes the Dublin Chase.

Sandown Racecourse Update

In contrast, Sandown will host its races as planned on Saturday. Initial worries arose when 22mm of rain fell within 24 hours, affecting parts of the hurdle track. However, a Friday lunchtime inspection found a suitable racing line near the chase track, deeming the course raceable.

Adjustments to Racing Schedule

  • The bank holiday meeting at Punchestown has been moved to Wednesday to accommodate Leopardstown’s shift.
  • Original declarations for the races will remain unchanged.

Other Racing Events Affected

Wetherby also faced cancellations following an 8 AM inspection that revealed unreliable track conditions. The West Yorkshire venue recorded 10mm of rain by midday Friday, compounded by further rain overnight, creating areas deemed unsafe for racing.

The 2026 Irish Gold Cup stands as a main highlight during the Dublin Racing Festival, where punters are eager to see which contenders will emerge as favorites.
