UK Mother Squanders £250,000 Life Savings on ‘Hollywood Stars’, Faces Homelessness

A mother from Worcestershire has found herself facing homelessness after losing £250,000 to a network of scammers posing as Hollywood stars. Jennifer Barton, 44, was manipulated over a two-year period by individuals claiming to be famous actors and musicians. As a result, she sold her home, car, and nearly all her possessions in hopes of love and financial assistance.
The Deceptive Web of Celebrity Scams
Barton’s ordeal began on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. She was contacted by accounts impersonating celebrities such as Alexander Ludwig, Charlie Hunnam, Nicky Byrne, and singer Michael Ray.
Gradual Manipulation
Initially, the conversations were casual, but soon they escalated into declarations of love. “They all told me that they loved me and wanted to marry me,” Barton recounted. Within weeks, the first impersonator asked for financial help, claiming he needed money for court fees.
- Initial request for £3,000 for court fees
- Ultimately sent £6,000 in cash and Bitcoin
The Escalation of Scams
As Barton became emotionally involved, she experienced a cycle of deception. A second account, again impersonating Ludwig, added another layer to the scam, leading her to send over £100,000. Following this, she was convinced she was communicating with a fake Charlie Hunnam, who also sought money.
The Most Devastating Loss
Among the most traumatic experiences came from a scammer posing as Michael Ray. This imposter convinced Barton that he could help with her bills through a “charity,” but first required her to send money. In a desperate bid to secure finances, she sold her home for £111,000, believing it would lead to a safe future.
The Reality of Homelessness
Unfortunately, the promises fell apart as she was left financially depleted. By Christmas, Barton had exhausted her resources and found herself homeless, living in temporary housing.

Legal Actions and Emotional Toll
Following the financial and emotional devastation, Barton has sought help from Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting center for fraud. The City of London Police is reviewing her case to gather further evidence.
She has also consulted with CEL Solicitors to recover her losses. Jessica Hampson, the firm’s chief executive, underscores that such scams are alarmingly common, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals.
“Fraudsters are adept at manipulating emotions and undermining trust,” Hampson stated. “The emotional harm can be as significant as the financial loss.” Barton’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers lurking on social media and the importance of remaining vigilant against online fraud.
