Armenia, Azerbaijan Agree on LNG and Bitumen Transit Deal

Armenia and Azerbaijan have established a significant transit agreement, enhancing energy cooperation in the region. This deal allows liquefied natural gas (LNG) and bitumen to be transported through Azerbaijani territory.
Agreement Details
On Tuesday, Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan announced the agreement, highlighting its importance for regional trade. He stated, “An agreement has been reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the railway transportation of liquefied gas and bitumen through the territory of Azerbaijan.”
This announcement opens new trade opportunities for Armenian businesses, allowing them to transport energy resources efficiently. However, Azerbaijani authorities have yet to provide an official comment.
Context of the Agreement
The announcement follows recent discussions between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding LNG transportation. Lilit Shaboyan, the spokeswoman for the Armenian Economy Ministry, indicated that Armenia is exploring the possibility of receiving LNG from Russia by rail through Azerbaijani routes. This solution aims to address existing import challenges for Armenia.
Shaboyan noted that Armenia currently relies on LNG imports from Russia and Iran and is optimistic about resolving these issues soon, saying, “The problem will be resolved very soon, as liquefied gas will begin being imported to Armenia by rail.”
Recent Developments Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The agreement comes amidst improving relations between the two countries. Azerbaijan has recently shipped domestically produced petroleum products to Armenia. The first shipment occurred in late December.
Both nations are taking steps to enhance bilateral ties following years of conflict. A pivotal moment in this process was last August when a trilateral summit at the White House facilitated a declaration to end decades of hostilities. The agreement included commitments to reopen transport routes and normalize relations.
