Unai Emery: Harvey Elliott’s Role Unchanged Despite Aston Villa Return

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has stated that Harvey Elliott’s status within the team remains unchanged despite his recent inclusion in the matchday squad. Elliott, a Liverpool loanee, returned to the team during the match against Newcastle United on Sunday but did not play.
Harvey Elliott’s Loan Situation
Emery addressed the media ahead of Aston Villa’s upcoming Europa League clash with RB Salzburg, emphasizing that Elliott’s future remains uncertain until the transfer window closes on February 2. Earlier in January, he acknowledged a reluctance to increase Elliott’s game time, explaining that five additional appearances would activate an obligation to purchase him.
Transfer Fee Debate
There is conflicting information concerning the transfer fee associated with Elliott. Villa insiders suggest the amount is closer to £30 million (approximately $41.3 million), while Liverpool claims it is £35 million (around $48.2 million). Currently, Elliott has participated in five matches this season but had not appeared in a matchday squad prior to the recent game against Newcastle since November.
Emery’s Comments on Elliott
On January 2, Emery noted, “The problem we have with Harvey is that this year he is on loan. If he plays matches, we must buy him.” The manager expressed that Villa’s position on potentially signing Elliott had not changed despite his readiness to contribute during matches.
Road Ahead for Aston Villa
While discussions surrounding Elliott have intensified, Emery stated that injuries could influence squad decisions. For example, Douglas Luiz joined the team due to midfield injuries, which opened a spot in the lineup. However, regarding Elliott, the manager reaffirmed, “The situation is not changing.”
Interest from Other Teams
Earlier this transfer window, Elliott attracted interest from MLS team Charlotte FC. However, for Villa to cancel the loan agreement, they would incur a fee payable to Liverpool. Additionally, as he has already played for two teams this season, he cannot transfer to another European club.
As the transfer window reaches its final days, Aston Villa and their fans await clarity on Elliott’s future following his recent surprise return. They hope for viable solutions that could benefit both the player and the club in the upcoming matches.
