Amputee Conquers Whitby’s 199 Steps for Charity

A 24-year-old woman, Lucie Maguire, from Kirkby Malzeard, accomplished an inspiring feat by conquering the famous 199 steps in Whitby. This challenge was undertaken to raise funds for charity and was a testament to her resilience following a life-altering accident.
Overcoming Adversity
Lucie Maguire faced unimaginable challenges after a serious accident at the age of 19. On January 27, 2021, she was struck by a tractor while she was assisting her mother with a broken car on a rural road. As a result of the incident, Lucie underwent amputation of her right leg and pelvis.
A Climb for Charity
To commemorate the fifth anniversary of her accident, Lucie embarked on the “hop to the top” challenge. Despite battling heavy rain and strong winds, she successfully reached St Mary’s churchyard at the summit of the 199 steps. The climb included support from her family and friends, who cheered her on throughout the journey.
Supporting Trauma Recovery
The charity benefitting from this fundraising effort is Day One Trauma Support. This organization played a crucial role in helping Lucie and her family navigate the difficulties that followed the accident.
