A severe winter storm is currently impacting several regions, including the Avalon, south coast, and parts of central Newfoundland. This storm has significantly complicated driving conditions and led to the shutdown of many businesses and public services.

Impact of Heavy Snowfall

As the storm progresses, driving has become challenging across much of the island. With numerous public buildings closed and many private businesses opting to cease operations for the day, road traffic has drastically decreased.

Weather Warnings Issued

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the south coast and Avalon Peninsula. Additionally, central regions are under snowfall warnings, and a blowing snow advisory is active for the west and southwest coast.

Expected Snowfall Amounts

  • David Neil, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, reports significant snowfall is anticipated.
  • Affected areas, including the south coast, central Newfoundland, and the Avalon, could receive between 15 to 25 cm of snow.

Future Weather Conditions

The storm is expected to subside by overnight hours. However, flurries are likely to continue the following day, accompanied by strong winds and temperatures dropping well below freezing.

Residents are advised to exercise caution and prepare for challenging weather conditions in the coming days as the snowfall transitions into lighter flurries.
