Landslide Forces Evacuation of 1,000 Residents in Italian Town

The town of Niscemi in Sicily is grappling with a significant geological crisis due to a landslide that has forced the evacuation of over 1,000 residents. This emergency was triggered by persistent rainfall brought on by Cyclone Harry.

Landslide Crisis in Niscemi

As the situation develops, the landslide has created a dangerous fissure, impacting the town’s historic center. This geological instability became apparent on Sunday when movement was first noted.

Extent of the Damage

The landslide now extends about four kilometers and continues to threaten further destruction. Mayor Massimiliano Conti has described the scenario as “dire,” emphasizing the precariousness of the town’s cliffside position.

  • The landslide height reaches up to 25 meters.
  • Aerial drone footage shows extensive damage, with homes and vehicles perilously close to the edge.
  • Over 300 families have been evacuated to safety.

Response and Evacuation Efforts

Authorities established a “red zone” in coordination with the civil protection department. Many displaced residents have sought shelter with relatives, while others have been accommodated at a local sports arena.

Emergency supplies were delivered by the civil protection unit from Palermo, supporting those affected during this crisis. Additionally, two provincial roads to the town have been obstructed by landslides.

School and Infrastructure Impact

All educational institutions in the vicinity remain closed as experts monitor the landslide’s progression, which shows no signs of abating. Regional president Renato Schifani has reported the overall damage from Cyclone Harry across Sicily at €740 million, a number expected to rise as the situation evolves in Niscemi.

Government Support

In response to this disaster, Italy’s civil protection minister, Nello Musumeci, assured full backing from the Meloni government. He has dispatched a team of geologists to aid local officials in assessing the landslide’s behavior and predicting future movements.
