Markham Resident Collects Transfers from All TTC Subway Stations

Edward Montoya, a 22-year-old civil engineering student from Markham, has taken on an intriguing task: collecting paper transfers from all Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway stations. His adventure began on January 8, after some classes were unexpectedly canceled.

The Challenge Begins

Montoya’s journey started at Don Mills Station, part of Line 4, the TTC’s shortest subway line. Covering 5.5 kilometers and consisting of just five stops, he collected his first transfer in about 30 minutes. Montoya then ventured onto Line 1 (Yonge-University), the longest line at 38.4 kilometers with 38 stops. This leg of his journey took approximately five hours.

Expanding Horizons

On January 14, he tackled Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth), which spans 26.2 kilometers and features 31 stations. Additionally, he rode the new Finch West LRT (Line 6), although it doesn’t provide transfers. To adapt, Montoya creatively fabricated his own transfer for that line.

Background on TTC Challenges

  • Line 3: Closed in July 2023 after a derailment.
  • Line 5: The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is anticipated to open soon.

Despite not finding the journey thrilling, Montoya enjoyed the thrill of collecting his transfers. “It’s like a scavenger hunt,” he remarked, referencing the single transfer machine at each station. He experienced moments of humor from fellow passengers who observed his repetitive reboarding of the same subway car.

Community Engagement and Recognition

Montoya’s venture has resonated with others who share a passion for transit systems. He noted that several people on Reddit disclosed their own collections of TTC transfers. The TTC commended Montoya’s initiative, with spokesperson Stuart Green praising it as a testament to public transit appreciation.

Reflecting on Public Transit

Throughout his travels, Montoya developed a deeper appreciation for Toronto’s subway system, citing its efficiency with trains operating every five minutes. Comparatively, he noted that buses in York Region, where he resides, do not operate as frequently.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Montoya plans to create a display featuring all his collected transfers. He is also contemplating a “speedrun” challenge, aiming to traverse every TTC subway line in record time. This endeavor highlights not only his dedication but also the enthusiasm for public transit in Toronto.
