Pegula Defeats Keys: Melbourne Defending Champion Faces Exit

Defending champion Madison Keys exited the Australian Open in the Round of 16. The 30-year-old American lost to her compatriot Jessica Pegula with a score of 3-6, 4-6 in Melbourne. Last year, Keys achieved her first Grand Slam title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the finals. However, in the match against Pegula, Keys committed too many errors and struggled to find her rhythm.

Pegula Advances to Quarterfinals

Pegula delivered a solid performance that allowed her to reach the quarterfinals at her fourth consecutive Grand Slam tournament. The 31-year-old converted her first match point after 78 minutes of play to secure the victory over Keys.

Men’s Singles Update

In men’s singles, Jannik Sinner is currently competing in the Round of 16 against fellow Italian Luciano Darderi. Italy’s second-ranked player, Lorenzo Musetti, has already advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating U.S. rising star Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

Musetti’s Challenge Ahead

Musetti will face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Djokovic progresses without playing after Jakub Mensik withdrew from the tournament. Musetti acknowledged the challenge, saying, “I have played against Novak many times. It’s always a lesson. However, I learn every time, and this will help me win against him someday.” The head-to-head record currently stands at 1-10 in favor of Djokovic.
