EFL Clubs Receive ‘Deal Sheet’ to Aid January Deadline Day Transfers

The English Football League (EFL) has announced the introduction of “Deal Sheets” to assist its 72 member clubs during Transfer Deadline Day. This initiative aims to facilitate last-minute transfers, providing clubs with additional time to finalize deals. The scheme will be implemented for the upcoming January transfer window, specifically on Monday, February 2.
What is a Deal Sheet?
A Deal Sheet is a document created to help clubs on transfer deadline day. It allows for an extra two hours to submit essential paperwork for a transfer or loan. However, this extension is only applicable if the main terms have already been agreed upon by the buying club, the selling club, and the player involved.
Key Features of the Deal Sheet
- The Deal Sheet can only be utilized by clubs within the EFL.
- It does not apply to transactions involving Premier League clubs. Those clubs must use a separate Premier League Deal Sheet.
- Deal Sheets can only be submitted during the last two hours of a transfer window, specifically between 5 PM and 7 PM on Deadline Day.
Timeline for Using Deal Sheets
Upon submission of a Deal Sheet via the Football Administration System, the buying club has until 9 PM on the day of the transfer window’s closure to complete all necessary documentation. This includes paperwork to be submitted to relevant authorities such as the FIFA Transfer Matching System, the FA, and the EFL.
Legal Standing of the Deal Sheet
Importantly, the Deal Sheet does not represent a legally binding contract. Clubs are required to complete additional forms and applications to legally sign and register a player. Both the buying and selling clubs, along with the player or their representative, must sign the Deal Sheet. Notably, players under 18 should not participate in the signing process.
Advantages of Implementing Deal Sheets
- Enhances efficiency in completing transfers between clubs in the EFL and the Premier League.
- Provides a structured process for last-minute dealings.
- Establishes a systematic approach to secure necessary agreements prior to the closure of the transfer window.
This initiative comes after a consensus among EFL clubs expressing the need for improved efficiency in late transfers. The introduction of Deal Sheets marks a significant step in streamlining the transfer process as clubs prepare for the busy January transfer window.
