Obed Vargas, a talented midfielder for Sounders FC, has received a significant opportunity: a call-up to the Mexico National Team for upcoming friendlies. This selection comes as Mexico gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Obed Vargas Called Up for January Friendlies

The friendly matches include a match against Panama and another against Bolivia. Vargas, who is only 20 years old, seeks to demonstrate his skills on the international stage. The first match will take place tonight at the Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez Stadium at 5:00 p.m. PT, while the second is scheduled for January 25 at the Ramón Tahuichi Aguilera Stadium at 11:30 a.m. PT.

Recent Achievements and Background

This call-up marks Vargas’ first appearance with the senior national team since he participated in the Mexico U-20s for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. His first cap came in October 2024, where he played as a substitute against the United States in a 2-0 victory.

Mexico’s World Cup Preparations

These friendlies are crucial as Mexico prepares for their World Cup campaign, where El Tri will start their journey against South Africa in Mexico City on June 11. Mexico’s group stage matches include:

  • June 11: vs. South Africa
  • June 19: vs. South Korea
  • June 24: vs. TBD (winner of Denmark, North Macedonia, Czechia, or Ireland playoff)

Vargas’ Performance with Sounders FC

Last season, Vargas showcased his talent by starting all 41 matches for Sounders FC. He contributed significantly, scoring six goals and providing seven assists. As he joins the national team, Vargas hopes to carry this momentum into the friendlies.

The Sounders are currently engaged in preseason training in Portugal, targeting the start of their 2026 MLS campaign. Their first match is set for February 22 against the Colorado Rapids, taking place at Lumen Field.
