Norway Provides Air Defense Missiles to Ukraine

Norway has stepped up its military support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian missile attacks. The Norwegian government has recently supplied a substantial quantity of air defense missiles, critical for the operation of the NASAMS air defense system. This initiative aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense against aerial threats, particularly in light of the harsh winter conditions.

Meeting between Norwegian and Ukrainian Defense Officials

Today marked a significant event as Norway’s Minister of Defence, Tore O. Sandvik, conducted his first meeting with Ukraine’s newly appointed Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov, who took office on January 14, 2026, discussed pressing defense needs for Ukraine.

Commitment to Air Defense Support

Air defense remains a priority in Norway’s military aid strategy. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has emphasized continued support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. “We will continue to support Ukraine in the fight they are facing,” he stated.

Funding for Military and Civil Assistance

  • NOK 85 billion allocated for Ukraine’s support in 2026.
  • Focus on both civil and military assistance.

Norway’s commitment comes as Russia intensifies its targeted attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, particularly energy facilities. The situation is dire, with Ukrainian temperatures dipping to minus fifteen degrees Celsius this week, causing power and heating shortages.

Effectiveness of NASAMS Air Defense System

The NASAMS air defense system, developed in Norway, has received international backing from countries such as the United States, Canada, and Lithuania. This system has proven effective against Russian missile threats, making the delivery of new missiles crucial at this juncture.

Statements from Norwegian Officials

Minister Tore O. Sandvik highlighted the urgency of the situation: “Norway has quickly delivered air defense missiles to Ukraine at a critical stage.” He noted that many areas in Kyiv remain without essential services due to regular missile and drone strikes.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide recently visited President Zelensky in Kyiv. He echoed the critical need for air defense support: “This is exactly the kind of help they need to protect themselves against these attacks.”
