Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh: ‘Border 2 May Mirror Dhurandhar, Not Aman Ki Asha’

Border 2, the much-anticipated sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 hit, will debut in theaters on the eve of Republic Day. Starring Sunny Deol, who reprises his role from the original film, this sequel is poised to attract significant attention.
Box Office Predictions for Border 2
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh recently shared insights regarding Border 2’s opening box office potential. He predicts that the film could earn approximately ₹30 crore on its first day, hinting at the possibility of even higher figures.
Advance Bookings and Earnings
- As of January 20, Border 2 has sold tickets worth ₹5.94 crore.
- Advance bookings surpassed those of Sunny Deol’s previous film, Jaat, achieving ₹2.63 crore compared to Jaat’s ₹2.37 crore.
Adarsh emphasized the importance of spot bookings over advance sales for determining opening day success. He noted that while advance bookings are promising, audience reactions on the day of the release will significantly influence the film’s performance.
Border 2 vs. Aman Ki Asha
Taran Adarsh drew a clear distinction between Border 2 and the earlier film Ikkis, which aimed for a message of peace reminiscent of Aman Ki Asha—a campaign promoting goodwill between India and Pakistan. Adarsh pointed out that Border 2 leans towards evoking nationalistic sentiments rather than messages of peace.
He noted, “Border 2 is about calling out the enemy like Dhurandhar. It’s not spreading the message of Aman Ki Asha.” This sentiment reflects the movie’s focus on conflict rather than diplomacy, distinguishing it from other narratives that prioritize harmony.
Potential Impact on Dhurandhar
Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar has performed remarkably, grossing ₹1,328.23 crore globally as of January 19. Adarsh indicated that the release of Border 2 might affect Dhurandhar’s ongoing box office performance, which has already begun to slow.
Veteran Lyricist’s Take
Javed Akhtar, a renowned lyricist, recently declined to rewrite any songs for Border 2, opting instead to focus on creating new memories. Adarsh acknowledged Akhtar’s perspective but stressed the primary motivation for audiences, which remains entertainment.
About Border 2
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is produced by prominent figures including Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta under T-Series Films and JP Films. Sunny Deol leads a star-studded cast featuring Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, with supporting roles filled by Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Anya Singh, and Medha Rana.
Overall, Border 2 is expected to evoke powerful emotions and nostalgia while also posing significant competition to its recent predecessors in the cinema landscape.
