Toews’ Return to Chicago with Jets Poses ‘Weird Situation’

Jonathan Toews, a prominent figure in the NHL, returns to Chicago wearing the Winnipeg Jets jersey in what he describes as a “weird situation.” Having been the Blackhawks’ captain from the 2008-09 season, Toews played a pivotal role in the team’s three Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015.

Career Highlights and Achievements

Drafted third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2006, Toews has accumulated an impressive 883 points through his 1,067 games in the league. His standout performance came during the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP, posting 29 points including seven goals and 22 assists.

Health Challenges and Transition

Throughout his career, Toews faced significant health challenges. He missed the entire 2020-21 season due to Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and had another setback related to long COVID-19. This limited him to just 124 games from the start of the 2020-21 season until the end of the 2022-23 season. As a result, the Blackhawks opted not to re-sign him after the last season.

New Beginnings with the Winnipeg Jets

After becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2023, Toews signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets on June 20, 2025. In the current season, he has registered 18 points, including seven goals and 11 assists, in 47 games for the Jets, who are struggling in the Western Conference with a record of 19 wins, 22 losses, and six ties.

Emotional Return to Chicago

In his final game with the Blackhawks on April 13, 2023, Toews was honored with a video tribute that caught him by surprise. Reflecting on his visit, he expressed mixed emotions but also excitement to reconnect with former teammates and friends. He dined with ex-teammates Andrew Shaw, Kris Versteeg, and Troy Brouwer, reminiscing about his days in Chicago.

Toews’s return to Chicago evokes memories of his illustrious career. He emphasized the team-oriented nature of hockey and credited the culture and opportunity he found in Chicago for his success.

Coach’s Perspective

Chicago’s current coach, Jeff Blashill, praised Toews for his winning mentality. He noted the importance of balancing offensive skills with the demands of teamwork and strategy. Blashill sees Toews as a role model for the players in his current roster.

As Toews prepares to face his former team, he acknowledges the lasting impact of his time with the Blackhawks and the community’s support that fueled his career.
