The atmosphere turned heavy as the shocking news of Clearview High School coach Thomas Hengel’s death spread. He and his wife, Lisa, tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Saturday night.
Tragic Accident Details
Authorities reported that Hengel’s 2020 Hyundai Palisade SUV was traveling on Banff Drive in Mullica Hill when it increased speed unexpectedly. The vehicle struck a curb, traveled across two front yards, and ultimately crashed into a house. Sadly, both Hengel, 72, and his wife perished in the incident, which caused the home to catch fire.
A Legacy of Coaching Excellence
Hengel had a remarkable 42-year coaching career at Clearview High School, retiring just last year. His extensive experience spanned over 100 seasons across various sports, including track and field and cross country. His contributions to the athletic community were recognized when he was inducted into the South Jersey Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
