Falcons Retain Jeff Ulbrich as Defensive Coordinator

The Atlanta Falcons have confirmed the retention of Jeff Ulbrich as their defensive coordinator. This decision follows the hiring of Kevin Stefanski as the new head coach. Owner Arthur Blank expressed that while he wouldn’t dictate coaching staff decisions, he recommended Ulbrich remain with the team due to his impressive performance in 2025.

Jeff Ulbrich’s Contract and History

Ulbrich has reportedly agreed to a new three-year deal with the Falcons. This marks his return to Atlanta after serving four seasons as a defensive coordinator with the New York Jets. Ulbrich stepped in as interim head coach for the Jets after Robert Saleh’s departure in October 2024.

Past Experience

  • Previously served as the Falcons’ linebackers coach from 2015 to 2019.
  • Promoted to interim defensive coordinator following Dan Quinn’s release.

Defensive Improvements Under Ulbrich

Ulbrich’s influence was quickly felt, significantly boosting the Falcons’ defensive performance. The team saw a remarkable increase in its sack total, jumping from last place in the league to a remarkable second overall in 2025.

Defensive Statistics

  • Franchise record: 57 total sacks.
  • 14 players recorded at least one sack, tying for the most in the NFL.
  • Sixth in the league with 16 interceptions.
  • Seventh in takeaways with 23 total.

Key Player Contributions

The 2025 season showcased the emergence of several rookies and second-year players. Notably, Jalon Walker, James Pearce Jr., Xavier Watts, and Billy Bowman Jr. played vital roles. Pearce led the team with 10.5 sacks, making it the highest for a rookie since Micah Parsons in 2021.

Outstanding Performances

  • Pearce’s 10.5 sacks are second in franchise history for rookies.
  • Watts, finishing his rookie season with five interceptions, aided the defense significantly.
  • Falcons became the second NFL team to have two rookies achieve over 10 sacks and over five interceptions in a single season.

Ulbrich’s system also highlighted the contributions of defensive stalwarts like A.J. Terrell and Kaden Elliss. Terrell forced tight-window throws on 35.5% of his targets, ranking fourth among heavily targeted defenders. Elliss recorded 30 pressures, making him one of two players in the NFL to achieve over 100 tackles, over 10 tackles for loss, and multiple sacks while also securing an interception.

Impact of Free Agent Signings

The addition of inside linebacker Divine Deablo proved beneficial. Despite missing a month due to injury, Deablo led the team in tackles and contributed to pass coverage with seven breakups.

Looking Ahead

While there is room for improvement, Ulbrich’s leadership has set a solid foundation for the Atlanta Falcons’ defense. With a young and promising core, the future looks bright under his guidance as the team aims to build on their success from the 2025 season.
