Highpointing has emerged as a popular pursuit among outdoor enthusiasts, combining a love for nature with a sense of adventure. This activity involves visiting the highest point in each state, drawing individuals of varying skill levels and backgrounds.

Among the most notable peaks is California’s Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, standing at 14,505 feet. This summit attracts hikers seeking both challenge and stunning views, with a rigorous 20-mile roundtrip hike required to reach its apex.
Celebration of Highpoints Across States
Recently, around 180 enthusiasts convened in Bishop, California, for a gathering organized by the Highpointers Club. The club, led by President Shannon Brumund, aims to promote the exploration of each state’s highest elevation. “We are a diverse group brought together by a unique hobby,” Brumund remarked.
A Diverse Challenge
Highpointing varies significantly by state. While some peaks, like Wyoming’s Gannett Peak, present formidable challenges, others, such as Mount Washington in New Hampshire and High Point State Park in New Jersey, allow for easier access via drivable roads. Notably, Charles Mound in Illinois can only be accessed on select weekends as it is located on private property.

Getting to every state highpoint is often a lifetime goal for individuals participating in this activity. Lucy Westlake, who achieved the remarkable feat of visiting all state highpoints at just 17 years old, believes that highpointing helps people discover the vast beauty of the United States.
For many, the experience of highpointing fosters camaraderie amongst hikers. “It’s essential to keep moving as you age, and this group encourages that,” said Dee Winters, who recently summited King’s Peak in Utah.
The Magic in the Journey
The journey to each highpoint often leads to unexpected scenic views and unique local experiences. Enthusiasts like Ray O’Conor from New York appreciate the charm found in farmlands and rural roads leading to these remote locations.
Siblings Lidy and Sjaak Van Schie travel from the Netherlands to participate in highpointing, finding joy in visiting lesser-known locations. “People may not understand, but we know the importance of this journey,” said Sjaak.
As members of the Highpointers Club continue to explore diverse landscapes and share stories, highpointing remains a vibrant way to connect with nature and fellow outdoor enthusiasts while traversing the varied terrain of America.
